Preparation and Research
First of all, I make myself familiar with the author's text. While I'm reading, I underline key points and make rough sketches: this helps me to understand the author's concept and allows me to start developing my own ideas for the illustrations. I then research the subject thoroughly using relevant literature and the Internet.
